Melissa Gijsbers writing prompts...

I do enjoy writing prompts from Melissa Gijsbers, also, as coordinator of The Ten Penners adults' writing for children group. These prompts are fun for warm-up exercises at our meetings. As things are busy in December and January, our next monthly meeting will be on Saturday the 1st of February.

Welcome! I hope you're doing well in the home run to Christmas. My youngest is 21 on Wednesday, so we're preparing for that too.

Before I continue with my newsletter information, an invitation to join my 12 Days of Christmas program, if you haven't already. Every day for 12 days after Christmas, I send you a writing prompt for you to enjoy. Click here for details and to sign up.

I also have some workbooks I created a few years ago that are perfect for kids to do over the holidays. There are only a few left. Click here for details and to get your copy.

For most of us on the list, we are in Australia and gearing up for the Summer holidays. The break can be a wonderful time to catch up on some reading and writing, especially on those days when it's really too hot to be outside.

A number, of years ago, my New Year's resolution, was to expand what I read. I found I wasn't reading a lot, and the books were all pretty much the same, so I joined the PopSugar Reading Challenge. One of my kids decided to join in too (we tweaked some of the prompts to make them more appropriate for a kid).

Since then, I regularly read a lot of books in a year.

If you want to grow your reading next year, here are some things that I did: Join a challenge - there are quite a few different ones out there Join a book club - I haven't done this as I don't like being told what to read, but it can help some people Count everything - this includes picture books and books you read to your kids, audiobooks, everything! Read what you enjoy - as I'm not at school and studying books, I stick to books I enjoy and don't finish books I'm not enjoying. Don't overthink - I'm often surprised by how many books I read in a year.

I set the GoodReads challenge each year, more to make it easy for me to find books later, and set a low number, and up it as I need to. By not focusing on the number, I'm surprised at how many books I actually, read. The biggest tip if you want to read more next year is to find books you enjoy and read as you can. And have fun with the books you're reading. As always, scroll down, for this fortnight's writing prompt, and books recommended details of workshops and webinars that are coming up.

I think that's everything for now!

Until next time & happy writing, and happy reading,

Melissa GijsbersWriting Prompt

With Christmas right around the corner, imagine what would happen if there's a disaster in Santa's workshop.

The disaster could be anything, big or small.

Write a story about what happens.

I'll be sharing this writing prompt with my fellow members of The Ten Penners and suggest they bring the story to our February meeting.

Happy reading, writing, and Christmas to you all. - Jill Smith, The Ten Penners Coordinator
